Description

Not every open door deserves to be walked through. Plenty of people want access to the founder, most want to drain without reciprocity, to get access to valuable resources and cancel the competition.

SET & SETTING is building an international network across culture, youth, health, human rights, sustainability, social innovation, entrepreneurship and creative work.

As that network grows, so does the number of people, organisations, investors, partners, intermediaries and opportunities asking for access.

We are looking for someone unusually sharp, discerning and comfortable saying no.

Your job is not to maximise the number of contacts around us. Your job is to help us distinguish between people who are credible, aligned, reciprocal and worth engaging — and people or organisations that are opaque, extractive, unreliable, reputationally risky or simply not good enough.

You will work directly with the founder as an intelligence and screening layer before important relationships move forward.

We value evidence over titles, prestige or impressive branding.

A famous name is not automatically a good contact.
A wealthy person is not automatically a good investor.
A prestigious institution is not automatically a good partner.

We want to know who we are actually dealing with.

Responsibilities

Research and screen prospective partners, funders, investors, advisors, intermediaries, service providers and other important contacts before deeper engagement.

Build concise profiles answering questions such as:

Who are they really? What do they control? How do they operate? Who benefits from the relationship? What is their track record? What risks or conflicts exist? What information is missing?

Cross-check claims against credible public sources rather than accepting self-description at face value.

Look for relevant information on:

  • professional and organisational track record
  • governance and ownership
  • previous partnerships and outcomes
  • reputational issues and credible controversies
  • litigation, regulatory issues or serious disputes where relevant
  • conflicts of interest
  • patterns of pressure, manipulation, opacity or disproportionate demands
  • whether the proposed relationship is genuinely reciprocal
  • whether their behaviour matches what they claim publicly

Distinguish clearly between verified facts, reasonable concerns and unanswered questions.

Recommend:

GREEN — proceed
AMBER — proceed only with conditions / more information
RED — do not engage

The founder makes the final decision. Your role is to ensure that decision is made with far better information.

This is not ordinary desk research.

You will learn how power, incentives, reputation, governance and relationship risk actually shape partnerships and business decisions.

You will work directly with the founder and see how intelligence affects real decisions about money, access, partnerships and strategic relationships.

The work crosses nonprofit, commercial, cultural and international environments, so you will encounter very different types of counterparties.

We value people who can say:

“This person looks impressive, but I would not let them through the door — and here is the evidence.”

Flexible remote collaboration, substantial trust and autonomy, meaningful analytical work, and a professional reference for strong collaboration.
